Right-Facing Iron-Framed Marble Italian Portrait Medallion
19th-century decorative portrait medallion, likely made in Italy, depicting a man in 17th or 18th-century style attire. It was created as a decorative object reflecting the historical revival tastes popular during that period.
The subject is depicted wearing attire and a hairstyle characteristic of the late 18th century (roughly 1770s-1790s). Specifically, the powdered hair curled over the ears and tied back in a queue (pigtail), combined with the high-collared coat and stock or cravat, places him firmly in this era, associated with the late Rococo, Neoclassical periods, and the time of the American and French Revolutions. The profile format was extremely popular during the Neoclassical period, drawing inspiration from ancient Roman coins and carved gems (cameos).
Pieces like this, often crafted in Italy (a center for marble work), were popular purchases for wealthy travelers on the Grand Tour, though this continued well into the 19th century.
Carved white marble for the relief, set against a contrasting dark, veined marble background (like Breccia or a similar decorative stone), and framed in iron.
